Fashion meets Interiors: featuring Tabula Rasa

I’m back with a new Fashion meets Interiors feature and today we’re showcasing the cutting edge NYC brand Tabula Rasa. I love their contemporary approach to knitwear and I know you will too. Meet Tabula Rasa founder Emily Diamandis as she styles Tabula Rasa’s clothing to match this stunning interior space.

I’m Emily Diamandis of Tabula Rasa. At Tabula Rasa we embrace this concept of being able to create an environment of opportunity. Every day is a reset, from the clothes you wear, the people you encounter, and the decisions you make.

I chose this design because the aesthetic resonated with my own style, playful and modern with sophisticated accents. I really connected with the clean look of this space balanced by the textural quality of the fringed stool and gold accents. I love to layer texture and pattern and elevate the look with a pop of gold jewelry.

I love having the opportunity to collaborate with Jacquin. I believe that any space we inhabit can become a personalized retreat of comfort, creativity and style and with Tabula Rasa I wanted to create products that allow the owner to express their personal style no matter the space. Jacquin translates this so well into her design.

Made for the modern journeywoman, Tabula Rasa is about feeling luxuriously at home, everywhere in the world.

10 Raffia & Glasscloth Furniture Favorites

Lately I’ve had my eye on raffia and grasscloth surfaced furniture as I makeover my bedroom decor. I love the nice texture raffia and grasscloth add to a space and I also enjoy the relaxed, coastal aesthetic of raffia. I’m currently looking to add raffia nightstands to my bedroom to add a bit of that resort, vacation vibe to my own space. I rounded up the best design inspiration featuring luxurious raffia furniture just to sell you on this awesome furniture option. I have also compiled my 10 must-have raffia furniture selections available for purchase right now.

Blake Raffia 3-drawer nightstand from Serena & Lily.
If you’re wondering about the durability of this material. Raffia is actually quite resilient. Raffia fibers come from the Raffia palm tree and the material is used in all sorts of products from heavy-duty baskets, to furniture, twine and rope (and more!). When your furniture is covered in raffia there is generally several coats of lacquer applied first to protect the surface from stains and damage, all while the raffia still maintains its characteristic texture.

Meade Raffia Dresser with nailheads from Williams-Sonoma Home.

You can also find raffia furniture accented with nailheads or even richly-dyed raffia decor options. Another raffia trend that’s coming back is simple raffia beds in all of their textured glory (see below). These classic beds can be found in antique form or newly designed from brands like Serena & Lily. Raffia-covered furniture is a fantastic way to move away from basic wood furniture throughout your entire house. In fact, the mixture of your current wood furniture with raffia-based decor will be a great blend of coastal meets modern design. Keep reading for my top selections for shopping raffia furniture for your own space!

NYFW Round-Up: Fashion Meets Interiors

The runway is an amazing source to turn to when searching for interior design inspiration. There is an undeniable correlation between interior design and fashion. Both fashion and interior design are a form of self-expression and undoubtedly play off of each other. As New York Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear fashion week winds down I’ve rounded up some of the boldest statements to look forward to in 2018 in both fashion and interior design.

Relaxed Glamour

Brandon Maxwell’s Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear via vogue.com

Design by Kelly Wearstler via Elle Decor

The idea of relaxed glamour was in full effect at 2018’s NYFW. Brandon Maxwell’s collection was filled with this contrasting style. One of the looks in the show, shown above, most perfectly embodies the idea of relaxed glamour by pairing a couture-esque skirt with a plain white t-shirt and furry slides. The juxtaposition of naturals and metallics, and the contrast of structured and casual make a lovely combination. The bedroom above by designer Kelly Wearstler is a great example of these combinations in interior design.

Mustard Yellow

Bottega Veneta Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear via vogue.com
India Mahdavi design via Architectural Digest

Mustard yellow is always an unexpected color in fashion and design, yet Bottega Veneta executes a gorgeous mustard gown that is so luxurious. When styled properly mustard yellow can be the highlight of a tropical-feeling, yet glamorous space like in the look above. Risk-taking interior designers like India Mahdavi have been fans of using mustard yellow in design, as demonstrated by Mahdavi’s retro-inspired luxurious seating area (shown above).

Caliente

Christian Siriano Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear via vogue.com
Hotel Particulier Montmartre Hotel lounge via mydomain.com

Another color of the year, Caliente, named the color 0f 2018 by Benjamin Moore, also has a major presence on the runway and in interior design. Christian Siriano opened his show with this statement-making color (shown above). Caliente is being seen on the walls of homes, as well as on rich velvet fabrics like in the chic Parisian lounge above. Caliente is a perfect color choice for somone wanting to make a statement with their decor.

Victorian

Zimmerman Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear via vogue.com

Romantic Victorian style is making a major comeback in the interior design world, but also on the runway. The soft composition of understated floral patterns is nicely juxtaposed against a more structured and masculine silhouette as seen in Zimmerman’s stunning suit pictured above. The dramatic stairwell in the interior design shown above has the same contrast of bold and structured, through the geometric floor and pop of yellow vases, all showcased against the delicate Chinoiserie wallpaper. The combination is beautifully timeless. Victorian florals and Chinoiserie prints are the ultimate feminine patterns for those of you looking to mix things up with an ultra-feminine look.

Ultraviolet

Anna Sui Fall 2018 Ready-to-wear via Vogue.com

Design by Nathan Turner featured in House Beautiful

Proof of interior design’s influence on fashion was highlighted in one of New York Fashion Week’s top shows. Pantone named Ultraviolet the “color of the year” for 2018 and NYFW designers definitely took notice of the popular hue. Designers like Anna Sui provided a modern twist on the color by pairing it with closely related lavender shades making it borderline monochromatic. Interior design has been a fan of ultraviolet and also tends to pair the color with other purples such as the library by Nathan Turner above. For someone who is looking for subtle ways to incorporate the color into their home, try using ultraviolet pillows for a pop of color.

Overall, it’s an exciting time in the design world for both fashion and interior design. Designers this 2018 are making bold statements, working with unexpected patterns and color combinations, and inspiring us all! What is your favorite trend from NYFW?

Brighten Your Home with Flowerbox Wall Gardens

I am always on the hunt for new ways to enjoy plants at home (and in the office), and innovative company Flowerbox Wall Gardens has made this their entire mission. Flowerbox Wall Gardens works with preserved plants to create custom gardens that can be hung on your wall or placed on a surface as decor. One of the BEST things about Flowerbox’s wall gardens is that…

-they do not require watering…

-they do not require sunlight…

-and you can’t kill them!

Flowerbox Wall Gardens can create a custom wall garden to match your style and aesthetic, and in a size perfect for your space. Flowerbox can even create an entire custom wall installation featuring their preserved plants if you’d like to go for a bolder look. Also noteworthy is that Flowerbox expertly preserves its own plants, so your finished wall garden will actually last for YEARS!

I recently had the opportunity to order my own custom wall garden from Flowerbox Wall Gardens. So exciting! Their company took the dimensions I wanted and then begin to mock-up various designs for me using a variety of plant species. The mock-ups are digital, so throughout the process I was eager to see what my own Flowerbox creation would look like in person.

When my wall garden arrived I found that the entire unit was very light as far as the weight is concerned. There was also hardware attached to make hanging my wall garden a breeze. I am so happy with how it turned out! I would definitely order with Flowerbox again, especially since the options for custom designs are nearly limitless. In the future, I would love to create a full wall installation in some area of my home. Until then I am loving my current wall garden which is a nice size of just under 3 feet wide.

Hanging my Flowerbox Wall Garden was so easy!

Flowerbox has also recently introduced pre-made Flowerbox wall gardens that are ready to order right away, without the wait time of a custom design. While my own wall garden was a custom project, I have rounded-up some of my favorite ready-to-order Flowerbox products to share with you today. Take a look at these fab Flowerbox Wall Garden products that are ready to ship!

Interiors by Jacquin event video: ‘CREATIVE ENTREPRENEUR MEETUP’

Interiors by Jacquin has launched an exciting event series called the “Creative Entrepreneur Meetup” and has just hosted our first event in this series in Houston, TX. The event took place at ARKA Living which specializes in beautiful, modern organic furniture.

My vision for the Creative Entrepreneur Meetup series is to bring together creative entrepreneurs of all backgrounds for an afternoon of networking, crafting, and creative collaboration. The inaugural event was a true inspiration with many participants coming away with new creative collaborations and networks. We ended the afternoon with a fun creative craft, which involved using a kiln to create stunning enamel pendants. Studio artist and entrepreneurs Kat Cole and Hannah Oatman guided us in our craft activity for the day. Check out the video below to get a behind the scenes look at Interiors by Jacquin‘s first “Creative Entrepreneur Meetup” event!

A special thank you to studio artist & metalsmith Kat Cole for participating as a speaker at this event as well as assisting in our awesome craft project. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see the architecturally-inspired jewelry of Kat Cole, then you should definitely watch my recent video interview with Kat Cole in her plant-filled home. Her fine art jewelry creations are truly original!

It can be difficult enough to find a general group of entrepreneurs to collaborate with, but I’ve found that that pool of people only becomes smaller when looking for “creative” entrepreneurs. I believe that’s because many people have not been encouraged to turn their creative talents into their business ventures, whether as a youngster or adult professional. It is my hope that my “Creative Entrepreneur Meetup” series will both promote creative entrepreneurship and facilitate creative business collaborations in each city this event takes place. Our next event will be in Dallas this Spring. If you would like to be notified about event registration, please feel free to send me an email. I’d also love to hear from you, what city should be next for Interiors by Jacquin’s CREATIVE ENTREPRENEUR MEETUP series?

Are YOU a creative entrepreneur? I’d love to hear about what you’re working on in the comments!

Global Inspirations: Exploring the Culture and Beauty of Moroccan Rugs

Photo via Kelly Martin Interiors

Moroccan culture has captivated our attention with their exquisite rugs, but many people don’t know much about the origins of their striking designs. Moroccan rugs were introduced into mid-century modern interiors in the 1920’s, however these vivid rugs date back to the Paleolithic Era where the native people of Morocco hand-crafted them as an intrinsic part of their survival.

Due to the harsh climates of North Africa, the Moroccan Berber tribes hand constructed the rugs to protect their families from either the frosty Atlas Mountains or the blazing Sahara Desert. Because of the different climates, tribes created various unique carpet styles. However, in most tribes the art of rug weaving was traditionally passed down from mother to daughter, and each design carried strong culturally symbolic meaning.

The intricate geometric patterns portrayed themes of fertility, spirituality, and male protection; they also depicted the extraordinary stories of its weaver. Moroccan rugs are valued for their one-of-a-kind designs. There are over 45 different types of Moroccan rugs, but we’ll be looking at three popular styles today: the Beni Ourain, the Azilal style, and the Boucherouite

Beni Ourain: Nuts for Neutrals
Beni Ourain rugs come in neutral tones with dark geometric lines. These thick wool beauties can be incorporated into minimalist interiors, paired with bright furnishings, or intertwined with other lively prints. The options are endless!

Azilal: Brilliantly Bold
Azilal rugs are known for their vibrant coloring and abstract patterns. The antique look of these textiles creates a beautiful contrast against modern interiors, and would also unite seamlessly with vintage decor.

Boucherouite: Alluring Artistry
Boucherouite rugs were woven from different scraps of materials by Berber women, which resulted in exquisitely unique works of art. No two of these colorful creations are the same, a quality that is highly sought-after!

The true true beauty of the Moroccan rugs lie in the depth and meaning that each design carries. Every stitch holds a magnificent piece of history derived out of a rich and fascinating culture. Decorating with any of these elegant rugs will breathe life into countless interiors spaces.

The space I chose is full of pastels and fun colors! Although it is winter, and these colors don’t really go with the season, I still was drawn to the room and how fun it would be to be in it.

I’ve chosen this room because I felt that it matched my bubbly personality. Pastels in interiors are not very common and that is why I love this space. I love trying styles that are not common and going out of my comfort zone.

When I looked at the interior design inspiration, the room reminded me of this particular dress’ fun floral embroidered details. Additionally, the dress’ shade of blue complemented the room perfectly! I also love the yellow couch and how it adds a pop of color and pattern to the room without overdoing it. It’s so smooth, yet edgy and that’s how I feel about my dress and the details of it.

Of course blush is a perfect pastel shade that can be worn in any season, so naturally I had to add it to my ensemble. I wore my blush statement earrings to accent the pastel blue tones. I think the simplicity in my combination of pastels, makes a big impact in the overall appearance itself, just as pastels do in an interior space.

Ideas for Decorating (Non-Functional) Fireplaces

Image via Room for Tuesday

During the cold months of winter, a fireplace often becomes a focal décor element of a space. But, for those who live in warmer climates or have fireplaces that don’t actually work, there are still ways to utilize and highlight your fireplace as an architectural element. A non-functional fireplace can be styled to fit any type of space whether it be contemporary or traditional. You can use sleek lanterns to bring a modern edge to a fireplace or decorate it with candles to create a more cozy and intimate setting. Whatever concept you are trying to achieve in your own home, it can be done using some of the decorating tips below!

CANDLES:
Filling a fireplace with candles instantly creates a cozy, comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Layering different shapes of monochrome candles is chic and adds a subtle architectural element. Not to mention, burning candles create a beautiful, naturally dimmed light similar to the light traditional working fireplaces give off. To take an extra step, you can also put candles in lanterns in the fireplace to add more structure.

VASES:
Combining different shapes and sizes of similar vases makes an area look less calculated and more organic. While the use of vases in a fireplace is unconventional, it creates a special elegance that usually the mantle of a fireplace would provide rather than the inside of a fireplace.

Photo from Decorpad

WOOD:
If you want to keep with the traditional use of fireplaces, there are multiple ways wood can be used to fill the empty space. One way that always looks great is meticulously stacking logs to create a beautiful and natural architectural element.

SCULPTURES:
Putting a sculpture or piece of art in a fireplace space is completely unexpected. This is the perfect idea for someone with eclectic taste that isn’t afraid to take design risks. If you are up for the risk, the final design result is artistic and unique!

FRESH FLOWERS AND GREENERY:
Adding a fresh floral arrangement or greenery is a quick and easy way to add a design element to an open fireplace. It is important to make sure the scale of the arrangement is large enough so it doesn’t get swallowed by the space of the open fireplace. For greens, you can combine an assortment of different sized plants.
